Bhubaneswar, April 18: In a major shake-up in the police setup in the wake of the murder of Judo coach Biranchi Das, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday ordered transfer of as many as eight Indian Police Service officials in the State. The officials transferred include the Deputy Commissioners of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack cities.
With regard to the alleged nexus between the police and gangster Raja Acharya, prime suspect in Biranchi Das murder case, the Chief Minister issued instructions that the government would request the Lok Pal of the State to probe into the issue.
The Chief Minister decided to go in for a Lok Pal probe into the alleged police-criminal nexus and order transfer of the senior police officials on the basis of a report of the State Director General of Police Gopal Chandra Nanda.
Patnaik had on Wednesday asked the DGP to submit a report on the alleged police-criminal nexus in the wake of the murder of Biranchi Das, Judo coach and former trainer of marathon boy Budhia Singh. Das was shot dead outside the Orissa Judo Association premises in the city on Sunday (April 13).
Nanda had submitted his report to the government on Thursday.
According to official sources, Deputy Commissioner of Bhubaneswar Amitav Thakur has been transferred as Additional Inspector General, Cuttack. Bolangir District Superintendent of Police Himamshu Lal has been transferred and brought in as DCP, Bhubaneswar.
Deputy Commissioner of Cuttack Soumendra Priyadarshi has been transferred as Superintendent of Police, Keonjhar. S. Pravin Kumar, Superintendent of Police, Sundargarh, has been posted as DCP, Cuttack.
Narasingha Bhol, former Superintendent of Police of Kandhamal who was brought to the Home Department in the wake of the communal violence in the district, has been posted as Superintendent of Police, Sundargarh.
P. Saini, DCP (Headquarters) in Bhubaneswar, has been transferred and posted as Superintendent of Police, Bolangir. In her place, Nayagarh Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar has been posted as DCP (Headquarters).
Yatindra Koyal, Superintendent of Police, Keonjhar, has been posted as Nayagarh Superintendent of Police, in place of Rajesh Kumar.
Opposition parties had started severely criticising the Naveen Patnaik Government for the deteriorating law and order situation in the State in the wake of the killing of Biranchi Das.
So far, the police of the twin-city have not been able to arrest anyone in connection with the murder of Das. The police have also failed to know about the motive behind the killing.
