Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had on Wednesday asked the DGP to furnish a report on the issue.
While initiating action against policemen for alleged dereliction of duty, Patnaik, who holds the Home portfolio, was likely to order some transfers in the higher ranks of the police setup in the twin-city, sources said on Thursday.
Patnaik is likely to act tough on the issue as the Opposition parties have attacking his government for the deteriorating law and order situation in the wake of the coach's murder.
Another indication that is coming from official circles is that the Chief Minister may take action on the issue even before the DGP submitted his report to the government.
Patnaik had sought a report from the DGP a day after Commissioner of Police for the twin-city of Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Binay Behera told media persons that he suspected a nexus between gangster Raja Acharya, prime suspect in the Biranchi Das murder, and some policemen.
If any policeman is found having such links, he would be treated as a criminal, Behera had warned.
The twin-city police have come under severe criticism from various quarters as they had failed to trace the prime suspect even after five days of the murder.
It has been alleged that the gangster had managed to evade arrest so far as he was getting information about movement of police team from within the police department.
Das was killed outside the Orissa Judo Association premises in the city on Sunday evening and the assailants had managed to flee the spot within minutes.
The criticism against police was growing because they have also not been able to know about the motive behind the murder of Das.
Whether it was the coach's interference in the controversy involving the gangster and a video album actress, or his informing the police about illegal trading in railway scarp was the reason behind his murder is still not known.
