There are 30 districts in the state which are the main administrative units. Each unit is under the administrative control of a District Collector.

36.7 millions: There are 62 tribes comprising of nearly one fourth of the population who live in almost all the districts of the state, though some of the tribes live in some specific forest area.

Agriculture remains the main occupation of the people in the villages. However, in urban areas people have several other professions.

Oriya is the language of the state. Though people through out the state speak Oriya, yet they understand Hindi, Bengali and English. People related to travel and hospitality industry could speak Hindi, English and some other regional languages fluently.

People in the state have a secular attitude. Orissa has a long history of religious coexistence. Despite having a majority Hindu population, Muslims and Christians live peacefully. Temples, mosques and churches are there in every town.
