Arun Dey attacked the BJD-BJP alliance government for its failure to protect the life and property of the common people.
The government, headed by BJD president Naveen Patnaik, had no moral right to continue in power when innocent people were being killed, they said. The no-confidence motion was brought as a mark of protest against the alliance government, they added.
The Opposition also attacked the government for its failure to contain Left wing extremism. The rice at Rs 2 per kg scheme was a hoax, they said.
Legislators belonging the ruling combine, however, defended the government saying that all measure were being taken by the administration to cope with the communal violence in Kandhamal and other areas in the wake of the killing of Swami Lakshmanananda last week.
The no-confidence motion, however, was likely to be defeated when the same would be put to vote late in the evening as the ruling combine had a majority with 93 members in the 147-member House.
The Opposition parties have a total of 46 members, including 38 from the Congress. There are a total of Independent members.
Criticism against Naveen Patnaik Government also grew outside the Assembly with various political parties and other organisations demanding its resignation for its failure to control communal violence in Kandhamal district.
CPI(M) Politburo Member and MP Brinda Karat who came on a visit to the state asked the Chief Minister to snap ties with BJP to put an end to the communal violence in Kandhamal.
Meanwhile, schools run by Christian organisations remained closed throughout Odisha in protest against the attacks on members of the Christian community, their houses and properties.
