Name of Orissa to be changed to Odisha

KalingaTimes Correspondent
Bhubaneswar, Aug 28: Odisha Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution for change of the name of the state from Orissa to Odisha and its language from Oriya to Odia.

The resolution also said that the Hindi translation of Odisha and Odia should be changed accordingly.

The resolution, which was moved by state Parliament Affairs Minister Raghunath Mohanty, was passed unanimously.

The state government's decision to change the state's name as Odisha and its language as Odia was approved by the Cabinet on June 9 this year.

The Assembly further resolved to authorise the state government to place the matter before the Government of India for carrying out necessary changes in the Constitution to officially change the name of the state as Odisha.

The resolution said the name of the state should be spelt as Odisha in English and Hindi and not as Orissa in English and Udisha in Hindi respectively, which was mis-spelt in the records of the colonial administration and remained mis-spelt in the First and Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of the country.
