Bhubaneswar, Aug 25: Protest against the killing of VHP leader Swami Lakshmanananda echoed in Odisha Assembly on Monday with legislators of ruling Bharatiya Janata Party demanding immediate arrest of those involved in the crime.

The agitated BJP members stalled the proceedings forcing Speaker Kishore Mohanty adjourned the House till 10-30 am on Tuesday.

The BJP MLAs rushed to the well soon after the House condoled the death of 76 persons, including an ex-member of the Assembly and security personnel killed in naxal attacks in the state.

As his request to the BJP members to allow smooth conduct of the proceedings failed, Mohanty first adjourned the proceedings for one hour.

The BJP legislators again rushed to the well and raised slogans demanding arrest of the guilty when the proceedings resumed. The Speaker then adjourned the Houses for the day.

Opposition Congress kept on demanding that the issue pertaining to the law and order situation in the wake of the murder of the Swami be discussed in the House, but in vain.

The Congress demanded that the Naveen Patnaik Government should step down on its own as it had failed to maintain law and order and protect the lives of common man.

Meanwhile, Congress submitted a notice for moving a non-confidence motion against the Naveen Patnaik Government.

After the House was adjourned for the day, Leader of Opposition J.B. Patnaik said they would move the no-confidence motion in the House on Tuesday.

Patnaik alleged that both the ruling parties – BJP and BJD – were hand in gloves with each other and the BJP members disrupted the Assembly proceedings to prevent a discussion on the law and order issue in the wake of the killing of Lakshmanananda.

Outside the Assembly, the bandh called by the VHP and other organisations against the killing of the Swami evoked a positive response. Roads wore a deserted look as people did not venture out of their homes apprehending trouble from the protestors.

According to reports from the city and other areas of the state, the bandh supporters attacked innocent people at many locations and damaged and burnt down a number of vehicles.
